The race is regarded by many trainers as a key lead up race to the Emirates Melbourne Cup as the competition is heavy and the quality of horses is superb. Once regarded as the greatest race in the Spring Racing Carnival apart from the Melbourne Cup, the Caulfield Cup has proven how successful it is at assessing a horse’s true staying ability when 12 of its winners went on to win the Melbourne Cup as well. 130 years of Caulfield Cup racing has made some horses a household name such as Might and Power, Let’s Elope and two time winner Rising Fast.

CAULFIELD CUP WINNERS
The winner of the 2009 Caulfield Cup will be added to a long list of horses who have shown their true staying ability in one of Australia’s toughest horse races. Many Caulfield Cup winners and placegetters go on to do just the same in the Melbourne Cup, which is why the Caulfield Cup is so highly regarded in the racing industry. In 2008, All The Good was named the winner with Nom Du Jeu placing second and Barbaricus placing third.
Throughout the years there have been some incredible horses such as Might and Power, Ethereal, Northerly, Mummify and Elvstroem who have dominated the Cup’s winning list due to their amazing performance on the field. Beating this success is those that have gone on to win the Melbourne Cup as well, to be named one of the Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup double winners. The honour roll includes Poseidon (1906), The Trump (1937), Rivette (1939), Rising Fast (1954), Even Stevens (1962), Galilee (1966), Gurner’s Lane (1982), Let’s Elope (1991), Doriemus (1995), Might and Power (1997) and Ethereal (2001).
Certain horses have been recognised not just for their win but the circumstances in which they won. Saint Warden was the longest priced winner in 1943 with odds at 100-1. Needless to say the crowd was speechless when the horse raced past the finishing post. The shortest priced favourite winners include Tulloch (4-6 odds), Manfred (5-4 odds) and Eurythmic and Rising Fast, both with odds at 7-4.
Apart from horses, there have also been jockeys and trainers which also deserve a mention in the Cup’s history. Scobie Breasley managed five Caulfield Cup wins during his career as a jockey and Damien Oliver is hoping to break that record this year when he attempts to win his fifth Caulfield Cup race. Lastly, it’s none other than the infamous Bart Cummings who has won a total of six Caulfield Cups.
Women have also been successful in the Caulfield Cup with trainer Lady Herries winning with Taufan’s Melody in 1998 and Sheila Laxon in 2001 with the New Zealand mare Ethereal.
